Lean and Agile are indeed 2 distinct approaches, lean having derived from the Toyota Production System (TPS) aimed to improve loss reduction and encourage sustainable production. Whilst modern Agile came from a historic meeting of 17 developers at a resort in Utah in 2001 where the Agile Manifesto was born and outlined 12 guiding principles that were seen as a way to define the new lightweight practices that had been emerging to evolve away from the heavyweight, regimented, regulated practices that had plagued early software development.
Agile and Lean are however rooted in similar values. Both approaches have evolved greatly as they have expanded into new industries, applications, and opportunities, and many organizations have been incredibly successful in using elements of both to sustainably deliver customer value.
The goal of Agile is ultimately to make the product development process more flexible, which is done by delivering in small, frequent iterations. The goal of Lean is to make the product development process sustainable, which is done by continual improvement. Incorporating customer feedback and requirements is ultimately at the core of both.
Scrum, the most widely practiced Agile process;
Whilst scrum has mostly beeen practiced in a software development environment, the agile project management methodology is increasingly being used by more and more organisations in others sectors and industries. Like other lean and agile methods, scrum optimises limited resources and creates efficiencies. Scrum also empowers teams to self-organise and work at a sustainable pace, free from outside interference. This helps teams reach their full potential and frees up leadership to focus on the company’s vision rather than on day-to-day management.
